School District 89 announced its free breakfast and lunch program at the start of the 2012-2013 school year. The program is sponsored by the Board of Education and offers free lunch and free breakfast for all District 89 students.
District 89’s food service provider (Preferred Meal Systems) strives to help children make smart decisions about the foods they consume by providing a variety of educational information on meals and healthy lifestyles. Their products are baked and not fried. They are also nutritionally formulated to meet federal regulations to provide today’s children with the energy and nutrients they need to learn and remain active. Studies have shown that children who eat school lunch consume, on average, more fruits and vegetables than those who bring a lunch from home. Today, our meal program offers more fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains than ever before.
