The new Parent Advisory Council was installed October 2, 2014 by Veronica Bonilla-Lopez, District 89 School Board President. The new council comprised of parent representatives nominated by school principals will serve as an advisory group to the School Board and be a liaison between the Board and the school they represent on policy issues and other initiatives. Several parents may also serve on Board committees. Several Leadership Training sessions are planned to help support the parents as they assume their responsibilities. “Parent Advocacy is a passion of the entire District 89 Board of Education and the Parent Advisory Council is an additional avenue toward better communication between parents and the Board,” said Gwaine Dianne Williams, Board Member. Member Williams chairs the District 89 Parent Advisory Committee. Parents are always encouraged to attend open Board and Committee meetings however delegates of this group will be assigned to attend Board meetings throughout the year to take notes and present information to their school mainly through regular PTA meetings or one-on-one communication with parents. The Council delegates will regularly report to the Board with feedback from the school on Board agenda items and other matters of concern.
